“Books are everywhere; and always the same sense of adventure fills us. Second-hand books are wild books, homeless books; they have come together in vast flocks of variegated feather, and have a charm which the domesticated volumes of the library lack. Besides, in this random miscellaneous company we may rub against some complete stranger who will, with luck, turn into the best friend we have in the world.”
Hi friends, hope you are well. I come bearing books, most of them are used and smell great & I can’t wait to get stuck in them
As it has been months since I last bought a book *coughs* The Lack of variety & expensive shipping *cough* I am lucky that I even got the chance to get these amazing titles. Hope you enjoy the small selection and do tell me if you’ve read any them or if they are on your to read list.
P.S. Links to the book synopsis will be linked
A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
720 pages
Picador
Genre: Contemporary, Literary Fiction, LGBTQ+
“When four classmates from a small Massachusetts college move to New York to make their way, they’re broke, adrift, and buoyed only by their friendship and ambition. There is kind, handsome Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, a quick-witted, sometimes cruel Brooklyn-born painter seeking entry to the art world; Malcolm, a frustrated architect at a prominent firm; and withdrawn, brilliant, enigmatic Jude, who serves as their center of gravity. Over the decades, their relationships deepen and darken, tinged by addiction, success, and pride. Yet their greatest challenge, each comes to realize, is Jude himself, by midlife a terrifyingly talented litigator yet an increasingly broken man, his mind and body scarred by an unspeakable childhood, and haunted by what he fears is a degree of trauma that he’ll not only be unable to overcome—but that will define his life forever.”
To say I am excited to finally own this is an understatement, the whole vibe, the setting and the topics just scream “I’ll love it!” The emotional trauma that everyone has warned me about is what scares me but this will be read pretty soon. Plus the synopsis reminds me of The Goldfinch
Life After Life by Kate Atkinson
(another book with Life on the title)
632 pages
Black Swan
Genre: Sci-fi, Historical, World War 2
What if you had the chance to live your life again and again until you finally got it right?
This is one of those books that I have been wanting to read for years, I even went ahead and read all of the author’s crime books to get a feel of her writing and I loved her stream of consciences style really looking forward to this one. Plus reincarnation
Songs of Solomon by Toni Morrison
337 pages
Plume
Genre: Contemporary, Classic, Historical Fiction, Cultural
“Song of Solomon” begins with one of the most arresting scenes in our century’s literature: a dreamlike tableau depicting a man poised on a roof, about to fly into the air, while cloth rose petals swirl above the snow-covered ground and, in the astonished crowd below, one woman sings as another enters premature labor. The child born of that labor, Macon (Milkman) Dead, will eventually come to discover, through his complicated progress to maturity, the meaning of the drama that marked his birth. Toni Morrison’s novel is at once a romance of self-discovery, a retelling of the black experience in America that uncovers the inalienable poetry of that experience, and a family saga luminous in its depth, imaginative generosity, and universality. It is also a tribute to the ways in which, in the hands of a master, the ancient art of storytelling can be used to make the mysterious and invisible aspects of human life apparent, real, and firm to the touch.
I can’t believe I snubbed this at a street vendor… She is another author that has haunted me, her name always rings when I go book shopping when I saw this I practically squealed. She is so prolific and well loved and I can’t wait to get stuck in this book and just from the blurb I can tell it’s going to be influential.
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
216 pages
Bantman
Genre: Contemporary, Classic, Literary Fiction, Feminist list.
A vulnerable young girl wins a dream assignment on a big-time New York fashion magazine and finds herself plunged into a nightmare. An autobiographical account of Sylvia Plath’s own mental breakdown and suicide attempt, THE BELL JAR is more than a confessional novel, it is a comic but painful statement of what happens to a woman’s aspirations in a society that refuses to take them seriously…a society that expects electroshock to cure the despair of a sensitive, questioning young artist whose search for identity becomes a terrifying descent toward madness.
This also is a very popular book about mental illness and it’s fairly short this will be an interesting quick read that will cover so much. I am so excited.
We Need to Talk to about Kevin by Lionel Shriver
400 pages
Harper
Genre: Contemporary, Thriller, Mystery
Eva never really wanted to be a mother – and certainly not the mother of the unlovable boy who murdered seven of his fellow high school students, a cafeteria worker, and a much-adored teacher who tried to befriend him, all two days before his sixteenth birthday. Now, two years later, it is time for her to come to terms with marriage, career, family, parenthood, and Kevin’s horrific rampage in a series of startlingly direct correspondences with her estranged husband, Franklin. Uneasy with the sacrifices and social demotion of motherhood from the start, Eva fears that her alarming dislike for her own son may be responsible for driving him so nihilistically off the rails.
I initially heard this from Abbie (Bookstagram Account Here) She sold it to e with her stunning review and I just had to grab it. The whole exploration of motherhood and the length one would go for a loved one is a trope that I am always down for.

Breathing Lessons & Amateur Marriage by Anne Tyler
Click for more (Breathing Lessons)
Anne Tyler shows us all there is to know about a marriage – the expectations, the disappointments, the way children can create storms in a family, the way a wife and husband can fall in love all over again, the way nothing really changes. Anne Tyler’s funny, unpredictable and endearing characterizations make “Breathing Lessons” truly entertaining.
Click for more (Amateur Marriage)
From the inimitable Anne Tyler, a rich and compelling novel about a mismatched marriage—and its consequences, spanning three generations.
I always pick up Anne Tyler books because she embodies real family life, her ability to make family drama so exciting and true is intoxicating. I have already read 2 of her books this year and I can’t wait for more.
Thank you so much for visiting and if you have read any of these or if they are your to read list tell me…
P.S.S. to all Kenyan fellows the post on where I buy the books will come later, my apologies but I promise I am working on it.
So until next time stay Bookish 😉
Pretty awesome to start my blog hopping today with our blog which always adds to my TBR lol. I have A Little Life & The Bell Jar at hom on my TBR. If I’m being honest, I think it’s the fact that they will bring me down mood wise that I haven’t decided to start them yet. I do think I’ll be tackling A Little Life this December, it’ll be one I read in parts along with another book. I added We Need to Talk About Kevin to my Goodreads TBR. Awesome list you’ve got here Bill! happy reading 🙂
